Pregnancy Q & A

What should women expect during delivery?

The process of delivering a baby is both exciting and difficult. During delivery, most women will progress through labor through a vaginal birth. During this time, contractions in the uterus will work to widen the opening in the cervix so the baby can pass through. Once the cervix is wide enough, the mother will push the baby out through the cervix and the vagina.

For some women, labor doesn’t progress as it should. For example, the patient’s baby may be in the wrong position, the contractions may not be strong enough to dilate the cervix, or the patient may not go into labor on her own. In these situations, medical intervention may be necessary. Depending on the situation, the doctors at Capital Women's Care recommend medication to help with labor or a cesarean section (C-section).

What happens during a C-section?

A C-section is a surgical procedure in which the doctor delivers the baby through an incision in the mother’s abdomen. The doctors at Capital Women's Care recommend this procedure when vaginal delivery isn’t possible.

During a planned C-section, the doctor uses regional anesthesia to numb the lower part of the body. If the C-section isn’t planned, general anesthesia may be necessary. After the patient is numb, the doctor makes an incision in the abdomen and another incision in the uterus. The baby is then delivered through these incisions.

How can the doctors from Capital Women's Care help with birth?

Throughout labor and delivery, the doctors from Capital Women's Care provide the patient with support and care. They check the patient’s cervix at regular intervals to make sure she is progressing, and they recommend interventions if labor isn’t moving along like it should. The patient’s doctor also delivers the baby safely when the time comes.

What if there are complications?

The doctors at Capital Women's Care are experienced and knowledgeable. If complications arise during labor or delivery, the doctor takes the appropriate action to protect the health of the mother and the baby. In some cases, the mother may need to make a decision regarding care when a complication occurs. In this scenario, the doctor explains the mother’s options clearly and concisely so she can make the right choice.
